Are We Ruined?

Posted at 2:54 pm under 6th Grade, Language, Public

Some language purists believe that text/IM language is ruining formal writing. This article from The University of Toronto (“Instant msg-ing messes with grammar? As if! lol!“) disputes that. Check out what Grammar Girl has to say on the topic! (Students – click on the Grammar Girl link and then listen to the podcast)

Thoughts? Theories? Will formal language ever disappear?

Thanks for the link to the Toronto article. I’ll be posting it up on my own Ning which is about EFL / ESL teaching. Great stuff and I’ve been advocating this kind of thing and making games for it, for a long time. I use http://www.transl8it.com to translate textbook stuff/stories/dialogues/songs into text messaging. Students are given the text messaging and then retranslate it. Really works. It isn’t everything but it is one more tool in our teaching arsenal. If you’d like to take a look at the ppt games I already have (especially the pop songs might interest your class), send an email and I’ll zip them over.

Great blogs here and really appreciate getting a look at how other teachers are helping their students immensely by promoting blogging as an educational method.

    David
